Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR)
for CCA Equivalency

The CCA Program Advisory Committee is working on a PLAR process to recognize health care providers who have many of the skills of a CCA, but do not possess Nova Scotia provincially approved certificates (PCW, HSW, HHP/HHA).
The PLAR process will take an individual’s education (formal or on-the-job training) and previous experience(s) into consideration. If the work and training done apply to the work of a CCA, then credit would be given towards CCA Certification. The individual and an assessor would identify ways in which individuals could prove their knowledge through various learning tools. The individual would then work on their own towards proving that knowledge. The assessor would evaluate the work and either grant, or deny credit for modules within the CCA Program.
The next step in the process involves gaining the additional education required to complete CCA Certification. This would be done by working on modules created by HSNSA for the PLAR program. Once the modules were successfully completed then the individual would write the CCA Provincial exam. Individuals would have approximately two years to complete the full process.
