Self-Directed Learning for CCA Equivalency

Program Background
In September 2000, the Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) Program replaced the HSW, PCW and HHP training programs in the province. The CCA program combined the materials and skills from the previous courses to ensure participants were prepared to work in either home support or long term care.
Educational programs currently available through HSNSA, and delivered through approved industry partners for those possessing provincially recognized certificates as HSW, PCW, HHP/HHA and CCA’s include:
Self-Directed Learning for CCA Equivalency
Self-Directed Learning for CCA Equivalency was viewed as an affordable and effective means of delivering educational opportunities to those seeking to further their professional growth while securing a skilled future workforce. The learning modules were developed to be administered to those possessing provincially recognized certificates (PCW, HSW, HHP/HHA) through an approved sponsoring organization.
Sponsoring organizations are considered to be; home support agencies or level II long term care facilities funded by the Nova Scotia Department of Health or training institutions approved by the Continuing Care Program Advisory Committee. Each sponsoring organization would provide a coach for individuals approved by HSNSA to participate in the program. The coach monitors the participants learning which is done independently at home, to ensure that all curriculum standards are met.
Sponsoring organizations interested in the program can download a program overview and application form here.
